Ooops! Old habits died hard. Hallie made a face as she backed out of the driveway, only to pull forward and park on the side of the street about thirty feet further up. She gave the for sale sign in front of her old house a rueful smile as she slipped out of the car and slung her bag over her back. It was still so weird not to go home after school, but to go next door instead.

“Hey,” she called out as she opened the front door on the neighbors' house and stepped inside.

“Hey,” a voice replied from somewhere out back. It sounded like Selma. That made sense, she worked at home. Hallie kicked off her shoes onto the mat and padded down the hall.

The rear of the house had a modern, open-plan design where the kitchen blended almost seamlessly into a large living room that was full of sun from the expansive windows. Selma was stretched out on the couch, peering at her laptop. She glanced up and smiled, brushing a strand of her long blonde hair off her slim reading glasses.

“Hi, Honey,” she called out as Hattie helped herself to some milk from the fridge. “Good day at school?”

Hallie shrugged. “OK, I guess,” she replied noncommittally. It had seemed rather pointless really. It wasn't like they'd actually learned anything today. Everyone was just waiting for it all to end. One more week and she'd be done with school forever... well, sort of. She'd be going to college in the fall... at the local state school on the other side of town. But that wasn't the same.

Selma grunted, but didn't follow up. “Heard from your father?” she asked.

The young woman grimaced and shook her head. “Not for a couple days.” She was a touch annoyed about that. She wanted to know if he was coming back for her graduation ceremony, or if his new job would keep him too busy.

Dad had lost his old job back in the winter. The company going under had come out of the blue and thrown him for a complete loop. He'd been working there for years and thought his position would last until he retired... his entire professional skillset had been developed around that assumption. He'd not been able to find any suitable work locally. The only offer he'd got was clear across the country. But he'd not seen any other option. He was out there now for a couple weeks of orientation and training and to look for a new house. With only days left at high school, it hadn't made sense for Hallie to go with him.

She'd suggested she just stay home alone. She was eighteen and it would only be for a couple weeks. They lived in a nice suburban neighborhood, after all. But her father hadn't liked the idea of a young woman sleeping alone in such a big house. Their area was upscale... but break-ins certainly weren't unheard of. Hallie also suspected that he didn't quite trust her to keep the house tidy enough for the showings.
